He was 29 when he married Sarah A L Thompson. She already had one child Ralph Harry Thompson, and went on to have three more children with Robert. Robert Reuben, Pamela May and Colin.

When he married the address given was 46 Wodehouse Street, St Augustine. At this time he gave his occupation as a consul operator in the shoe trade. He must have moved to 27 Greyhound Opening, which was where Sarah Ann was living. They lived here until just after the war in1948, when they moved to 6 Truman Close. 27 Greyhound Opening had been a typical 2 up 2 down terraced house in the city. Originally there had been gas lighting. A cast iron stove is remembered by Colin, Roberts youngest son. There was a backyard and outside toilet. There was no kitchen sink, but a tap outside which was shared by 4 families. 2 Families shared the toilet.

Robert kept a silver watch, which had the name Bobby Dunn, caretaker of Bull Close School. There is some mystery as to why Robert had it.

Robert liked to attend a local public house after he was married, and had moved to West Earlham, called the Shoemaker. This pub is still there today.

Robert died on the 25th February 1989, a day after his 86th birthday.
