For a while she worked at a large shop in Reading Town Centre, and one of the sons of
the owner took a liking to her and wished to marry her. She turned down this
proposal.

Emma according to my mother, Winifred's memory was a sweet, independant, quiet, nice natured lady. My mother used to travel on the train once a year to Brockham. Her gran
Emma Tovey, used to wait with a large white apron, and when she saw the train approaching, she would take off her apron and wave it to mum and the family so they could see her.

My mother Winifred remembers that she would often wear a cap, and would smoke from a clay pipe.

My mother also remembers Emma sitting with a bowl, peeling various foods.

Emma was a keen gardener and kept pretty rose bushes outside the cottage. In later
years a trellice was put up outside the door. After Emma died Percy and his wife
Nelly occupied Rose Cottage.

It wasnt very long before they had moved to Brockham, where there were lime pits.

They had a lovely cottage here. Just off the main Dorking Road. A small railway
station was attached, and this needed to be crossed in order to get to their cottage,
which was named Rose Cottage. It still exists today, and I visited their home when
my Great aunt Nellie was still living there.(19810 You entered the main door into the living
room, which had a large fireplace, over which the cooking was done, at the back
was the scullery and to the right were two small bedrooms.

Before running water, outside, to the left was a water butt, and Emma and George
kept a cage with a small bird by the front door. The garden was steeply sloping and
they grew as much produce as they could. They also kept a pig and chickens.
Once a year the pig was slaughtered, and this was either smoked or salted and hung.
Every part of the pig would be used. The butcher would take a cut, as his reward for
killing the animal.

Rose Cottage has now been completely renovated and modernised, little of the
original cottage remains.

George and Emma had 14 children altogether. The first two boys died in infancy
ie George Thomas and Niles S Cooper. One of them died whilst teething.
William (Bill) was the oldest surviving boy, Emma was the oldest girl.

The children attended the local village school.

All the boys served in WW1 and all came home, one however suffered from
shell shock. Another boy died as a teenager, (14) when he was run over
by a combined harvester.

George and Emma would make regular visits back to Reading, we have
photographs of them in the back garden of 12 Park Place. They would love to
take their grandson on these occassions to Shiplake, and they would go boating
on the river as a special treat.

She appeared on the census in 1881 in Headley, Berkhsire.⁽⁶⁵⁵⁾ She died Not known. Sarah was born and raised in the parish of Bradfield, Berkshire. Her parents John Tovey, of Bradfield, and Martha Sellwood, of Bucklebury, lived at 187 Great House, Bradfield. It appears that the wife of her elder brother William, also of Bradfield, either died or left him with a very young family. In the 1851 Census, Sarah is living with her brother (she is 22) as a servant. His youngest child William is living with Sarah's parents back at
home.

At some point after this Sarah moved to Woodley, where she conceived Emma. The birth certificate notes Emma as 'female' Tovey, so a name had not been decided for her daughter at that point. Her daughter was born in April 1857 and it was at this time that she married her first husband, who was a George? Lay. At some point George passed away, and Sarah married her second husband, Thomas Shade. In 1881 they are living in Headley Sonning Berkshire. Thomas Shade was also a widower, and living with them is his son by his first marriage, also a Thomas Shade.

When her daughter Emma married George Cooper, they began their married life, living with Sarah and Thomas in Woodley. Sarah and Thomas were witnesses at the marriage of Emma Tovey and George Cooper. Parents: John TOVEY and Martha SELLWOOD.
