(297) He was a Corn Merchants Labourer in 1881 in Norwich, Norfolk. (298) He appeared on the census in 1881 in Lower Westwick St, Norwich St Swithin..(298) He was a Mallsters' Labourer in 1889 in Norwich, Norfolk. (107) He was a Labourer in 1891 in Norwich, Norfolk. (580) He appeared on the census in 1891 in 74 Lower Westwick St, Norwich. (581) He died in England. Charles Thompson's story begins in 1829 in Norwich, Norfolk. It appears from the 1851 Census that he was born in St Miles Norwich, which was mainly known as St Michael at Coslany. He was the 3rd boy of 7 children found so far. Henry, Edward, CHARLES, John, Ann, Elizebeth and William.

His parents were Henry Thompson, and Ann. Henry was from Buck, which is either Buckenham Norolk, or Buckingham, Bucks. Ann appears to have been from St Miles.

It appears that Charles had no formal schooling as he marked his marriage certificate in1855 with a cross, as did his wife. He probably started work quite young, as did most working class children from this period, and before legislation was enforced ensuring all children receive a basic education.

He appears first on the census return of 1851. At this time he around 22 years of age and unlike his other siblings, he has left home and is living with William Armes on Heigham St, Norwich. William was 68 and a widower and appears to have had two jobs i.e. a cordwainer, which is in the shoe business, and also a Publican. Williams daughter was living at the residence, and so was a servant Mary Ann Day, as well as a young niece Francis Fountain, who was a shoe binder. The others were all lodgers and were aged between 47 and 18.

Namely James Spurgeon 22 an excavator from Belton Suffolk, Samuel Mudd aged 47 a labourer from Hale Norfolk, Alfred Brunch aged 23 a draper from Gressnel Norfolk, Cornelious Brunch aged 20 a baker from the same, James Harrison 65 a waver from Norwich St Mary,
Henry Green aged 18 a dyer, from Norwich St Andrew, CHARLES THOMPSON aged 23 a labourer from Norwich St Miles, William Labbell aged 34 a cordwainer from Hethersett, and Jonas Durrant aged 60 a labourer from Strumshaw, Norfolk. James Spurgeon, Samuel Mudd, and Jonas Durrant were all married but it seems they were living away from home at the time.

At the time of his marriage Charles was living at Fullers Hole, which is no longer recognised on modern maps. At this time Charles is a Waterman. His wife's profession is not mentioned. He and Maria Fuller were married in the parish church at St Martin at Oak on the 30 July 1855. Charles was 26 years of age when he married.. Their witnesses were William Fisher and Susanna Flite, but it is not known whether they were relatives or friends.

Their first recorded child came 6 years later - Mary A, then followed Henry, Joseph Minister, Edward, Charles, and Thomas. In 1867 on Joseph's birth certificate, Charles occupation is recorded as being a bricklayers labourer, and he and Maria are residing at Royal Oak Yard, Norwich, in the district of West Wymer.

The next record I have of Charles is in 1881, where he appears on the census. At this time, he is a corn merchants labourer and is living at Lower Westwick St, Norwich St Swithins. At this time, perhaps to earn extra money, Charles and Maria have a lodger by the name of Arthur Bygrave, a foundry labourer (Iron) , living with them, he is a young man of 21 years of age. At this time, it appears that all the children are living at home, i.e. from Mary to Thomas.
Mary was 20 and a says maker, and their youngest children Edward 11 Charles 9 and Thomas 6, were at school.

After this period, the next record I have of Charles is from Joseph's marriage certificate in 1889. On this, it appears that Charles was working as a Mallster's Labourer

Charles, finally appears on the 1891 census with his wife Maria. At this time, he is 62, but his wife's age is recorded as 54, so it appears that the marriage certificate was not entirely accurate with Maria's age.. Charles is still working as a labourer at this time. His wife's work was not defined. Their two youngest boys, Charles and Thomas, now in their teenage years, 17 and 16 (though this does not tie up with previous ages given) are working as labourers.
Interestingly enough, Maria's mother Mary Fuller, is living with them, as a widow, and is the grand old age of 85.

(NOTE) He was married to Maria FULLER on 30 Jul 1855 in St Martin at Oak, Norwich, Norfolk, England.(213) (214) It appears that there is some discrepancy in the age of Maria Fuller, on the census she seems to have been fairly consistent in giving her age that would give a birth date of 1836

However on the marriage certificate she states that she is 22, when all indications would have it that she was 18 or 19. Perhaps she would have been regarded as a minor, Parents did not witness her marriage. It is a mystery

(593) He was an Iron Worker before 1915 in Norwich, Norfolk.(133) He died in 1915 in England.(594) Joseph Minister Thompson was born on the 8th July 1867. From what we can ascertain, he was the 3rd child of 6. The eldest being Mary A, then Henry, Joseph Minister, Edward, Charles, and Thomas. He was vaccinated under the compulsory vaccination act and we still have the original medical certificate to state the same. He had this vaccination when he was just one year old or thereabouts.

From his marriage certificate, which is marked with a cross, it appears that he was illiterate, and so like many children of his time, he probably had little or no formal education.

He was born at Royal Oak Yard, Heigham, and seems to have spent most of his young life in this area.

In 1881 he appears on the census with his family. They are living at Lower Westwick St, Norwich, St Swithin, Norfolk. Joseph along with his elder brother Henry are coal labourers, Henry is 18, Joseph is only 13, and already probably working very hard to earn his keep.

He married Sarah Ann Louisa Carey in 1889, when he was 21, at which time he is working as a wire weaver. Family tradition has it that he and Sarah lost a number of babies, either as miscarriages or still births, (6 in all) before they were able to successfully raise a family. This must have put quite a strain on them. Known children are Charles, Joseph, Rose, Thomas Eric, Nellie Myrtle and Sarah Anne Laura (my grandmother).

In 1891, he and Sarah have moved to 5 Cooper Yard Barn Road St Benedict Norwich. On the 1891 Census, he is still working as a wire weaver.

Joseph died in about 1915, when Sarah his youngest was only three. He was only 48 so he died quite young, and left behind a young family and ill wife. The cause of death is not known to us at present.

His daughter Sarah was not old enough to really remember her father, but her sister Nellie remembered him as did her elder siblings. Parents: Charles THOMPSON and Maria FULLER.

(130)(130) She died on 14 Mar 1984 in Royal Berks Hospital, Reading, Berkshire. (130)(130) She resided in an orphanage Aylesham Road 1915 - 1922 approx in St Lukes, Norwich, Norfolk.(603) She resided 6 Truman Close 1948 onwards in West Earlham, Norwich, Norfolk. (129) Sarah Anne Laura Thompson was born in Norwich, Norfolk. She had to go in a home when she was three years old because her father had died, and because her mother had an illness which we think was rheumatoid arthritis. It meant that she couldn't walk and Nan remembers her mum in a wicker wheel chair. The authorities then said that her mother would not be able to cope with the children on her own. Her mother was very distressed about this. She only had half a crown a week to look after them at home, which would not have been enough, without a male to earn keep for them. Sarah's mother was quite ill at the time, and after the children had been in the home for two weeks, they were allowed home because she was so distressed and upset at not having them with her, but, because of circumstances they had to go back. After this, she was permitted to see them once a month. She would sit on a form and wait for her children so she could see them. If they were sent on errands by the orphanage, then they would sneak home to see their mother.

The orphanage that Sarah went into was on Aylesham Road. She did not like it there much. She was very young and the older girls used to frighten her. She came out a nervous wreck. She stayed there for 7 years until she was 10. A long time for a little girl. The home was for working class children. Some of her siblings were in the orphanage with her. Nellie was one. Tom was in a boys home. They would go to Sunday School in twos, on Aylesham Road. St Lukes Church, and would attend the Philadelphia School. Once, after Sarah had been for a long walk and was thirsty, the leaders at the orphanage would not allow her to have any water, their reasoning was that sweat and water causes more water?.... At Christmas they would hang stockings. Once Sarah received some chocolates and a tea set, which she kept for years and years. It was a treasured possession.

At the orphanage there were some twirly stairs right at the top of the house. At top to bedroom there was a door, one which the sweepers used to sweep the chimneys. Girls used to say that there was a ghost behind that door. Gran used to be scared and think that there would be a ghost coming after her. (she would have been 5 to 6 years old by this time). Sarah developed a severe nervous instability, and she was not permitted to go swimming when she eventually left the home.

Joseph her elder brother, was the one who finally got her out of the orphanage. Joseph and Alice, his wife, lived with Sarah's mother. Alice's sister and her children. Nellie had said that if she was going to have them then we will get the children out. Sarah got stronger.

Joseph and Rose her elder siblings did not go into the home. Joseph was in the army. Rose was old enough to look after herself. So perhaps she stayed with her mother. She married when she was 18. Her mother had felt that she was too young to marry. Sarah well remembers the day she saw Uncle Joe standing there. He told her he was taking her home for good. She remembers that her mum was sewing when she got home. She had a clear white apron on. She was so pleased to see all her children back. After this, Sarah went to St Miles, Nellie went to Heigham St School. It was quite a while away.
Sarah remembers that her mum used to cook a little, she would sit down, and do a lot of work. She could stand, and she shuffled a lot, and held the children's arms for support, she would then be able to get to St Benedicts to buy some fish, and meat. Sarah would like to go with her mother, pushed her in a wheel chair made of basket with a handle to guide it. She began work when she was about 14 years of age., In her early years she worked in the shoe industry. and started off at Turner Road. She remembers that her wages were 7 and 6 a week, for an 8am to 6pm day.
Sarah could not remember the First World War. She did not enjoy her younger years. She knew her mother loved her very much, but felt deprived because of the time she had spent in the orphanage.

At some point Sarah fell in love with a sailor, though this was not approved of. She then became pregnant with my father. Family tradition has it that Joe and Alice (who was a sister of Ralph's father) wanted to have him. But Sarah insisted on keeping him. She needed to work to earn money and would occasionally look after Ralph. Lillie Cook looked after him quite a bit, and Sarah's mother also nursed him. She would come home for lunch. She fed Ralph on Nestles milk (condensed) and Robs biscuit, similar to Farley's Rusks. She later married Robert Chettleburgh, and went on to have three more children.

Sarah could not remember the First World War. She did not enjoy her younger years. She knew her mother loved her very much, but felt deprived because of the time she had spent in the orphanage. Sarah remembers going with Nellie and Nellie's friend with their mother, they called at St Peters Woods, and went through dip, so that Sarah's mother got tipped over, her face went into the stinging nettles, but she took it in good part.

At the time the family got no financial help, but Sarah could never say that she went hungry, she remembers dumplings, bone stew. Sarah did not have any extras, and got no pocket money. Out of her 7 and 6 wage, she gave 5 shillings to her mother, and kept 1 and 6 for herself the other shilling went for club clothes.

Sarah felt the money was not good enough at the shoe factory so gave her notice, and got another job. After she had Ralph, she went back to Holmes and got her old job back.
Ethel Thompson? had said get a job, then you can do shoe work at home, which is what she did.

Nellie was a little older, and so remembered her father. He was only 40 to 41 when he died. Sarah did not realize what she had missed until she was older, and had children of her own.

Sarah remembers that she used to take her mother twice a week to the pictures, in the wheelchair. The attendants would help. Nellie later bought a bike. Tom gave Sarah a peg to put under the wheel to act as a brake. He did this because when Sarah went to pay Nellie's bike money, she forgot to put the brakes on her mothers wheelchair. The wheelchair started going backwards, but someone was there luckily to stop her. Her mother told Sarah not to worry, her mother was a happy go lucky person, and could see the funny side of things.

Rose had felt that the children were well off in the home. Rose worked at a silk factory. on Dereham Road

Sarah moved from Grey hound Opening up to 6 Truman Close with Robert and the children.
Colin still lives there today. Conditions i.e. the housing was much better. Sarah tended to do all the decorating, and purchasing of furniture etc. Ralph helped her buy a couple of suites of furniture when he worked at Lebus. Sarah loved to travel and went to Tunisia and Spain and later on to Canada, where she had a close friend. She worked part time at a little restaurant near Jerrold's in Norwich, and she also did silver service work at the Royal Hotel. She was very good at her work.
