Perhaps Walls He appeared on the census in 1851 in Walls Buildings, Norwich St Augustine, Norfolk.(55) living with uncle and aunt He was educated Scholar in 1851 in Norwich St Augustine, Norfolk. (55) He was a Cordwainer on 1 May 1866 in Norwich, Norfolk.(64) He resided Magpie Road on 1 May 1866 in Norwich, Norfolk.(61) He resided Walls Buildings in 1869 in Norwich St Augustine, Norfolk. (58) He was a Shoemaker in 1871 in Norwich, Norfolk.(56) He resided Queens Gardens in 1871 in St Martin at Oak, Norwich, Norfolk, England. (56) He appeared on the census in 1871 in Queens Gardens St Martin at Oak, Norwich, Norfolk.(65) He was a Cordwainer in 1881 in Norwich.(66) (59) He resided Little Crown Yard in 1881 in St Martin at Oak, Norfolk, England.(59) He appeared on the census in 1881 in Little Crown Yard, St Martin at Oak, Norwich, Norfolk.(67) He was a Porter at a Factory in 1889. He was a Chapel Finisher in 1891 in Norwich, Norfolk. (57) He appeared on the census in 1891 in 4 Osbornes Buildings, St Martin at Oak, Norwich. (68) He died in Norfolk, England. The history of Edward Clarke Carey, begins on the 25 October 1845 ,with his birth at the Walls Buildings, Norwich St Augustine. He is the second boy of William Carey and Martha Ellis. Their first child Henry Ellis Carey (named from Martha's maiden name) appears to have died in sometime after 1851 and before 1860. Edward appears to be the oldest surviving boy, after which comes Feargus W. Carey (Irish sounding) Henry Ellis Carey, (again) and Robert J Carey.

It has always been a mystery as to why Edward was named Edward CLARKE Carey. The answer may be found in the 1851 Census.
Here we have living at Walls Buildings an Edward Clarke aged 58 married to Mary Clarke (formerly Carey, an auntie of Edward's father William) aged 58. Living with them are William and Martha - Edwards parents, as well as Henry Ellis Carey aged 9 scholar, Edward L (an error) Carey aged 4 also a scholar and Feargus W. Carey aged 2. It seems most likely then that EDWARD was named after his great uncle Edward Clarke.!! Mystery solved.
From this 1851 Census it appears that Edward was living with his parents and young family at his uncle and aunties. All the adults in the household were working in the Silk industry, and all were Hand Loom Weavers. What kind of hours this involved, and who would have been looking after the children is unknown.

Since Edward is defined as a scholar on the 1851 Census, it can be assumed that he had a rudimentary education.

The next record I have of Edward Clarke Carey is his marriage certificate from the 1st May 1866. By this time he is 20 years of age. He signed his name on the certificate, so it appears that he can read and write, a great step forward for working class children from this period.
He is marrying Sarah Ann Ives aged 18. His profession at this time is as a cordwainer, which is a profession, connected to the shoe industry. His wife is a power loom weaver. At the time Edwards residence is Magpie Road, and Sarah's is Heigham Street.. Edward and Sarah were married at the Register Office n Norwich, so had decided not to have a church wedding. The witnesses to his wedding were William Carey, presumably, his father, and also a Mary Ann Russen. I do not yet know what her connection to the family was.

It appears from his daughter Sarah's vaccination certificate, that in 1869 he is still living at the Wall Buildings, St Augustine.

The next record I have of Edward is on the 1871 Census. Here, he is living at Queens Gardens, Norwich St Martin at Oak. His occupation is now recorded as a shoemaker and he is 25 years of age. Their first two children Joseph and Sarah aged 5 and 2, are living with them.

Ten years later in 1881, Edward Clarke Carey and his wife again appear on the census. He is now 35, and his occupation, is again recorded as a cordwainer, so it seems he stayed in the shoe industry for much of his life. They have moved from Queens Gardens, and are now living at Little Crown Yard. Norwich St Martin at Oak. The couple have a family of children ranging in ages from 14 to 2. All the children are scholars, except for Joseph H A Carey aged 14, who is a hairdresser.. Joseph H A aged 14, born Heigham, Sarah A L aged 12, born St Augustine, Nelly aged 9, born St Martins, Lydia aged 7 born St Martins, and Rose A aged 2 born St Martins.

In 1889 Edward appears on his daughter Sarah's marriage certificate. His occupation is listed as a porter at a factory. So it appears that he had a career change at some point. He would have been 44 approx, at this time.

He next appears on the 1891 Census aged 45. Here he is defined as a chapel finisher, so another career change. At this time he is still living at Norwich St Martin at Oak, but has moved to 4 Osborne's Buildings. Living with them at this time are Edward W Carey aged 9, born Norwich, May aged 5 born Norwich, and William R, aged 1month born Norwich. This indicates that Sarah conceived when she was in her mid 40's.

Also living with them are his married daughter Nellie and her husband Richard Wyer. Nellie is a silk weaver and Richard is a wire weaver. They probably brought much needed extra cash into the home. This is the last record I have of Edward Clarke Carey.
Parents: William CAREY and Martha ELLIS.

He was married to Sarah Ann IVES on 1 May 1866 in Registry Office Norwich Norfolk.(21) (61) Mary Ann Russen is noted as the 2nd witness to Sarah's marriage to Edward Clarke Carey
On the 1881 Census, living with Mary Ann was Lydia Ives, and she is listed as Thomas's mother in law. Therefore Mary Ann's maiden name was Ives and is probably a sister of Sarah Ann. Related in some way. Children were: Joseph H A CAREY, Sarah Ann Louisa CAREY, Nelly CAREY, Lydia CAREY, Rose A. CAREY, Edward W CAREY, May CAREY, William R CAREY.

(82) He resided Walls Buildings St Augustine in 1851 in Norwich St Augustine, Norfolk.(82) He died in England. Robert Carey's story begins with his birth on the 8 July 1788 in Norwich Norfolk. He appears to be the oldest boy of three children. Namely Robert, William born 1790 and Mary born 1792. I am not sure of the parish in which he was born, though his siblings were both born in St Augustine. Patron Sheets within the LDS church suggest that he was born in St James Pockthorpe, rather than St Augustine.

The next record I have of Robert Carey is in 1809 with his marriage to Elizabeth - surname as yet unknown, but the 1851 Census states that she came from Ireland.

Robert and Elizabeth went on to have five known children. Edward Carey born 1817, William Carey born 1820, James Carey born 1822 all at St Martin at Palace, and then Marianne Carey born 1827 and Maria Carey, born 1831. Both girls appear to have been born in St Clement with Edmund Parish. Perhaps the 1841, Census would reveal more children.

In 1840 he appears on his son William's marriage certificate. His occupation is a Weaver at this time.

He then appears in 1851 on the census returns. By this time he is 63 and his wife Elizabeth is 62. His occupation is defined as a Hand Loom Weaver in the Silk Industry. He is residing at Walls Buildings with his wife and daughter Maria, aged so. His wife works as a shoe binder, as does his daughter.

At present this is all the information that I have on Robert. Parents: Robert CAREY and Mary WINTER.

bullet Robert CAREY(55) (98) was born in 1756 in Norwich, Norfolk. (99) He died in Great Britain. Robert Carey's history begins with his birth in about 1756, in Norwich Norfolk. At present his parentage is unknown.

He married a Mary Winter on the 1 Aug 1787 in the parish of Norwich St Saviour. and went on to have three children - Robert Carey - born 1788, William Carey born 1790 , and Mary Carey born 1792. Robert was born in St James Norwich, and William and Mary were born in St Augustine, suggesting a move between the birth of the first and subsequent children.

His son Robert married an Elizabeth from Ireland, and his daughter married an Edward Clarke, she lived in Walls Buildings with her husband, as did Roberts grandson William and his wife and children, as seen in the 1851 census

He was married to Mary WINTER on 1 Aug 1787 in St Saviour, Norwich, Norfolk.(100) Children were: Robert CAREY, William CAREY , Mary CAREY.

bullet Sarah Ann Louisa CAREY(18) (56)(59) (102)(103) (photo) was born on 7 Oct 1868 in St. Augustine Walls, Norwich.. (104) She was vaccinated on 27 Jul 1869 in Norwich, Norfolk. (105) She resided Queens Gardens in 1871 in St Martin at Oak, Norwich, Norfolk, England. (56) She appeared on the census in 1871 in Queens Gardens St Martin at Oak, Norwich, Norfolk.(106) She resided Little Crown Yard in 1881 in Norwich, Norfolk.(59) She appeared on the census in 1881 in Little Crown Yard, St Martin at Oak, Norwich, Norfolk.(59) She was a Power Loom Weaver in 1889.(107) She resided 4 Osbornes' Building, St Martin at Oak, Norwich in 1889 in Norwich, Norfolk. (107) She appeared on the census in 1891 in 5 Cooper Yard Barn Road, St Benedict Norwich, Norfolk. (108) She died Apr - May 1932 in Heigham, Norwich. (109) Sarahs story begins on the 7th October 1868, the date of her birth in St Augustine Walls, in the sub district of Coslany, Norwich, Norfolk. A few months later, in the following July, she was vaccinated in an attempt to keep a check on childhood diseases. These vaccinations were compulsory, and I still have the original certificate on file.

She is the second eldest of a family of eight children. Joseph, Sarah, Nelly, Lydia, Rose, Edward, May and William. All born between 1867 and 1891.

Sarah first appears on the 1871 census at Queens Gardens St Martin at Oak, Norwich.
At this point she is only two, and she and her brother Joseph are living with both their parents. Her father is a shoe maker. A big industry in Norwich in the 19th Century.

She then appears aged 12 on the 1881 Census where she is described as a scholar. Her brother is a hair dresser, at the ripe old age of 14. Her youngest sisters, are all described as scholars, even Rose, who was only 2 at the time! At this time her family were living at Little Crown Yard, St Martin at Oak, Norwich.

She married on the 23 Feb 1889, when she was just 20 years of age. Her husband was Joseph Minister Thompson. On her marriage certificate her address is noted as 4 Osbornes Buildings, St Martin at Oak, and her occupation is as a Power Loom Weaver. It is not known whether William and Priscilla Cogman witnesses to her marriage, were friends or relatives.

It appears that Sarah could read and write, as she was able to sign her name on the marriage certificate.

In 1891, she appears with Joseph on the census. By this time she is living at 5 Cooper Yard, Barn Road, St Benedict, Norwich.

She had 6 living children - Charles, Joseph, Rose, Thomas Eric, Nellie Myrtle (still living) and Sarah Anne Laura. Family tradition has it (from Sarah) that she had at least 6 babies, all of which died either in birth or miscarriage.

Later on in life Sarah Ann Louisa developed some kind of disability, possibly rheumatoid arthritis, that hampered her mobility. She was widowed relatively young at 47. She then had to go through the trauma of only having a little money to bring up her family. Because of this the youngest children had to go into an orphanage, (much of this has been described in her daughter Sarah's history). Her youngest was only three at the time. Thomas went into a boys home and Nellie and Sarah into the girls home.

Sarah Ann coped as best she could, she could bear it no longer after a couple of weeks and had to see the children. She was quite ill at the time. From then on she was permitted to see them once a month, but if the children were asked to go out on errands, they would always pop home to see her.

Eventually, after seven years the youngest were able to go back home with their mum.
She is remembered sewing, and wearing a clean white apron. Because of her disability she would sit and do much of her work. She also had a wicker chair with a handle at the back, and the children would take her out. Sarah her daughter remembers forgetting to put the brake on once, and the wheelchair began to go backwards, another time the wheelchair tipped and Sarah had the pleasure of a face full of nettles. She took it all in good part.

My father Ralph recalls being told that he was nursed and looked after by his grandmother, which was shortly before she died in 1932. I have the original bill for the funeral, which Great Uncle Joseph, gave me shortly before he died. He also gave me the original marriage certificate and his mother and fathers vaccination certificates.
Parents: Edward Clarke CAREY and Sarah Ann IVES.

She was married to Joseph Minister THOMPSON on 23 Feb 1889 in The Register Office, Norwich, Norfolk.. (107) Children were: Charles THOMPSON, Joseph THOMPSON, Rose THOMPSON , Thomas Eric THOMPSON, Nellie Myrtle THOMPSON, Sarah Anne Laura THOMPSON.

bullet William CAREY(1) (55)(73) (55)(60) (110)(94) (61) was born on 4 Aug 1820 in St Martin at Palace, Norwich, Norfolk. (111)(112) He was christened on 6 Aug 1820 in St Martin At, Palace, Norwich, Eng. (113) He resided Walls Buildings in 1845 in St Augustine, Norwich, Norfolk, Eng.(114) He was a Weaver between 1845 and 1881 in Norwich. (115) He appeared on the census in 1851 in Walls Buildings, Norwich St Augustine, Norfolk.(55) He was a Silk Weaver in 1866 in Norwich, Norfolk.(61) He appeared on the census in 1881 in Norwich St Augustine, Norfolk. (73) He was a Silk Weaver in 1891 in Norwich, Norfolk. (116) He resided 29 Rose Yard in 1891 in St Augustine, Norwich, Norfolk. (117) He appeared on the census in 1891 in 29 Rose Yard, Norwich St Augustine.(110) He died after 1891 in England.(71) He has Ancestral File number 1JQ6-TW4. William's history begins on the 4 August 1820 his birth in Norwich, Norfolk. Two days later on the 6th August 1820, he is christened at the church of St Martin at Palace, Norwich. The second eldest known child of Robert Carey and Elizabeth. His siblings were as follows. Edward Carey born 1817, William (himself) born 1820, James Carey, born 1822 and Maria Carey born 1831.

He married on the 27 Jul 1840, when he was regarded as a minor, at just 19 years of age. His Occupation is a weaver at this time, and he is residing at Norwich St Augustine. He appears to have had some rudimentary education as he is able to sign his name on the marriage certificate. He married Martha Ellis also a minor, at the parish church of St Augustine. Norwich. Henry and Hannah Steward were the witnesses, but the connection is unknown at present.

It seems likely that William followed his father into the weaving trade, as his father is also recorded as a weaver on the marriage certificate.

He next appears on the birth certificate of his son Edward Clarke Carey in 1845, here he is residing at Walls Buildings St Augustine, and is still a weaver. His wife Martha registered the birth.

The next record I have of William is from the 1851 Census.. Here he is still living at Walls Buildings, St Augustine Norwich with his uncle Edward Clarke and Edward Clarkes wife Mary - Williams aunty. Here it specifies that he was a Hand Loom Weaver in the Silk Trade, as are Edward, Mary, and William's wife Martha.

At this time William and Martha have three young children Henry E Carey - aged 9, and a scholar, Edward C Carey aged 4 and a scholar, and Feargus W. Carey aged 2. There is definitely an Irish Connection here, most likely Williams mother Elizabeth. It would be interesting to find out the middle name of Feargus, as this may supply the maiden name of his mother, who is recorded elsewhere as being from Ireland.

The next record of William is in 1866, where he appears on Edward Clarke Careys marriage certificate, here he is recorded as being a Silk Weaver.

The next record of William is on the 1881 Census. Here he is still working as a weaver at the age of 60, as is his wife Martha. At this time, they have two sons still living with them. Henry E Carey aged 21, and a brush maker, and Robert J Carey aged 18, a printer, both are unmarried, but probably brought needed extra cash into the home. Their dwelling is not specified, but they are living in St Augustine, Norwich.

In 1891 William and Martha are living at 29 Rose Yard, Norwich St Augustine. They are both 70, and WIlliam is still employed as a Silk Weaver, by this time very experienced. By this time all the children have moved out and they are living on their own. Perhaps a peaceful time, perhaps a lonely time.
This is the last record of William at present.
