(318) He died on 2 Feb 1975 in 11, Trafalgar Square, Long Eaton, Nottingham. (319) He was a Painter/Decorator. (320) Alfred Grant Bennett Harris was the first child of Ethel Maud Harris..
He was born in Reading. His mother married David Green and they
lived at the end terrace 3 Park Cottages Emmer Green (later Kidmore
End Road)

He worked as a plumbers mate, and later became a painter and
decorator.

He served in World War 1, and we have pictures of him in his army
uniform.

He married Emma Cooper in 1922. They had 4 children
together. Whilst Emma's first boy Edward was staying, Alfred would
take him on a bicycle up to Shiplake. Just after the fourth child George,
was born, Alfred left with a lady called Ann. Who had been a friend of
the family. They lived around Emmer Green for a while, but then moved
to Bridlington.
They stayed together until Ann's death. After this, he moved to
Nottingham, with his son Ken.

He kept in touch with his daughter Winifred, and they had at least two
meetings before he passed away. He also kept in touch with her by
mail, and sent his condolences when Winifreds first daughter Ann, died
in infancy.

He was very generous, and to make up for the past, he wanted to pay off
Winifreds mortgage, which, at the time, was a lot of money. She felt that
he should use the money for himself, so politely refused the offer.

In later years Alfred's letters to Winifred, reveal a thoughtful, yet ill, lonely
man. Winifred's husband Ralph would visit him in Bridlington, when he
was in the area, and they would always go out for a friendly drink.

In his earlier years he had been very sociable and apparantly liked to
be the life and soul of a party.

When he left Emma, he wanted to take one of the girls with him, but
Emma wanted to keep the family together. In the early years his only contact
was through his mother who still lived in Kidmore End Road, she would
complain to him if she felt the children were too scruffy, or were not well
kept. He would send Emma about 2 shillings, which would cover the rent
and upkeep. On occassions he forgot to send money and would need
reminding. Emma coped with this by putting everything on tick, until
she could pay.

He was cremated and his ashes were spread over the sea.

At some point Ethel moved to Emmer Green, and Winifred her granddaughter remembers that she lived at 3 Park Place, when she was growing up.
For reasons of her own Ethel did not wish to recognise her grandchildren through Alfred, but she did keep an eye on them, to ensure that Emma was looking after them well enough, and would pass on her opinions to Alfred if she felt anything was amiss.
